Second only to the clicker, the target stick is perhaps one of the most versatile training tools in the kit. You can use the target stick to teach almost any exercise of which targeting is an element, or where it is necessary to clarify a concept in the dog’s mind. These target sticks are made from high quality aluminium and are collapsible into four sections. They fit easily into your purse or training bag and come with instructions on target training. For those interested in further developing their target stick training, Morgan Spector, in his book "Clicker Training for Obedience" (see below), shows you how to use a target stick to train your pet for jumps, go-outs, heeling placement, retrieving, and much more!

Dogs, cats and other pets can easily learn to touch a target stick for a click and a treat. Touching a target stick is also an easy behaviour for new clicker trainers to teach.

Target stick training is a versatile training aid. When the dog will freely follow the target stick, you can lead the dog wherever you want it to go, instead of having to pull, push, lift or coax it. You can target the dog into the car, onto the grooming table, over jumps, or into the correct heel position. You can put the target stick upright in the ground to teach the dog to go away from you. With the target stick you can teach many tricks and useful skills, such as closing the door, turning a light switch on and off, and retrieving objects by name.

Marine animal trainers have used a target stick for years. Combined with a clicker, a target stick becomes a wonderful training tool for all of us.
